HIV

HIV, or Human Immunodeficiency Virus, is a virus that attacks the body’s immune system, specifically the CD4 cells (T cells), which are crucial for fighting infections. If left untreated, HIV can lead to the disease AIDS (Acquired Immunodeficiency Syndrome), which significantly weakens the immune system and makes individuals more susceptible to opportunistic infections and certain cancers. HIV is primarily transmitted through contact with infected bodily fluids, including blood, semen, vaginal fluids, rectal fluids, and breast milk. It can be managed with antiretroviral therapy (ART), which helps individuals maintain a higher quality of life and reduces the risk of transmission to others. In the context of HR, understanding HIV is essential for promoting workplace health, creating supportive policies, ensuring discrimination-free environments, and providing appropriate resources and training related to health and wellness.
